Land Acknowledgement

O’ Siem (Hello, in Squamish). In the spirit of Zari, the thread that links my work, I raise my hands to my ancestral journey across other lands: My ancestors trace to pre-partition India, a region impacted by British colonization, and with the Gujarati re-settling, impacted the lands and communities of the Bantu and Nilotic Peoples in Kenya and Tanzania. I was born and raised on the Treaty 7 territories of Alberta and studied on the lands of the Algonquin Peoples of Ontario. I have lived and worked in post-Colonial South Korea. I am today, because of these intergenerational relationships and migrations.
Today, I live, work and learn in Port Moody, British Columbia, Canada, on the traditional, ancestral, and unceded territories of the xʷməθkʷəy̓əm (Musqueam), Sḵwx̱wú7mesh (Squamish), səlilwətaɬ (Tsleil-Waututh), Kʷikʷəƛ̓əm (Kwikwetlem), and Qiqéyt (Key-Kayt) Nations. I honor and respect their enduring connection to this land, since time immemorial, offering gratitude for their traditions, teachings, and stewardship. This woven complexity inspires me to approach my work with a deeper sense of connection, awareness, respect, and responsibility.
